Xanthelasma

What is Xanthelasma?

Xanthelasma palpebrarum are soft, yellowish patches or bumps that develop around the eyes, often near the upper or lower eyelids.
They are cholesterol deposits that sit just under the surface of the skin. Although xanthelasma are harmless, many people choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons, as they can be difficult to conceal and may gradually increase in size.

At MK Aesthetics, our experienced medical team offers safe, minimally invasive treatments to remove xanthelasma and restore smooth, even skin around the eyes.

What Causes Xanthelasma?

Xanthelasma can appear in anyone, but they are more common in those with:

  • High cholesterol or triglyceride levels

  • Thyroid disease

  • Diabetes

  • Liver problems

  • A family history of lipid disorders

Sometimes, xanthelasma occur even when cholesterol levels are normal.
During your consultation at MK Aesthetics, we will assess your medical history and may recommend a cholesterol blood test through your GP to check for any underlying cause.

How Xanthelasma Are Diagnosed

Diagnosis is usually straightforward and based on appearance.
Our clinicians will examine the area carefully during your face-to-face consultation and discuss suitable treatment options.

If you have multiple or rapidly growing lesions, we may suggest seeing your GP for a lipid profile test to check cholesterol levels.

Aftercare and Recovery

Following treatment, you may experience mild redness or swelling for a few days.
Most clients resume normal activities quickly. Our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions, including how to keep the area clean and promote healthy healing.

To prevent recurrence:

  • Maintain a balanced, low-fat diet

  • Avoid smoking

  • Manage cholesterol and blood sugar levels with the help of your GP

Can Xanthelasma Come Back?

Yes — recurrence is possible, particularly if cholesterol levels remain high.
We recommend regular monitoring of your cholesterol levels and healthy lifestyle habits to reduce the risk of recurrence.

How long do fillers last and why should you have the treatments?

Over time our body stops producing collagen and elastin, both of which contribute to a youthful appearance. We start losing collagen generally at the age of 25. The collagen and elastin level decreases at a rate of 2% per year, and the body will have stopped producing it altogether by your late twenties or early thirties which results into the sign of ageing such as wrinkles, fine lines, creases. At this point dermal facial fillers (HA) can be user to restore volume and hydration, whilst helping to regenerate the body’s own collagen production (neocollagenesis).

How long do fillers last? It depends on how your body reacts and which hyaluronic acid is used, but the effects of most of the dermal fillers last between 6 to 18 months. There are two different kind of dermal fillers and most common hyaluronic acids are, one is called Juvederm, and the other dermal filler is called Restylane or Perlane. Restylane and Perlane last between 6 months and 1 year, However, Juvederm Voluma XC has been clinically proven to last up to 2 years.

The Treatment

Dermal filler treatments usually take 20-40 minutes and the quantity of dermal filler required depends on the level of volume loss and the areas you want treated. After a consultation and assessment, keeping in mind your anatomy and your goals, your Doctor will inject Hyaluronic Acid, with an ultra-fine needle, after applying topical numbing cream if required. In some cases, a local anaesthetic is used, but many dermal fillers contain anaesthetic. When the dermal filler is injected into the skin, the hyaluronic acid volumizes, softens and hydrates the skin. It also promotes the production of collagen and elastin underneath the skin which gives the skin a more youthful texture

At MK Aesthetics, we offer dermal fillers with a stabilized form of HA, which is biocompatible with your skin. It is synthetically made which means there are no ingredients derived from animals or humans. A trained professional will inject small quantities of the filler into a wrinkle, or area in which volume is desired, to smooth/plump it out. Dermal fillers are approved by the FDA, and are minimally invasive and, when performed by an experienced and trained practitioner are safe.
